Why rotate a video here

Three fixed angles, no guesswork

Turn the picture 90, 180 or 270 degrees clockwise. Those are the angles the engine accepts, so there is no slider to nudge and no crooked result to undo.

Mirroring is a separate choice

Flipping a clip horizontally or vertically is its own setting, so you can mirror a video without rotating it, rotate it without mirroring, or do both in one pass.

Nothing to install

The rotation runs on our servers over an encrypted connection. There is no software to download and no account needed to use it.

Rotate to the left or to the right

The rotation is measured clockwise, which is all you need to think about: 90 degrees puts a clip filmed on its left side upright, 270 degrees does the same for one filmed on its right, and 180 degrees turns an upside down recording the right way up.

The setting starts on No change, so a video you only want to flip or convert passes through with its orientation untouched. Whatever angle you pick applies to the whole clip from the first frame to the last.

The rotate control sits in the settings panel beside the uploader.

Flip and mirror

Mirroring is not the same thing as rotating. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, which is what fixes selfie footage where text reads backwards. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom, so the picture is reflected rather than turned.

Both live in the same panel as the rotation, and both default to leaving the video alone. Combine them with an angle when a clip is turned and mirrored at once, and the two are applied in a single conversion instead of two round trips.

What you can upload, and what you get back

MP4 is what most people bring, and it is far from the only format that works. MOV from an iPhone, AVI, WEBM, MKV, WMV, FLV and the rest are all rotated the same way, and you can add several files at once: each one comes back as its own video with the same settings applied.

The output is MP4 unless you say otherwise. The panel's Output Format select also offers 3G2, 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, OGV, WEBM and WMV, so the same job can turn a clip upright and change its container in one step.

You can also paste a link instead of uploading, or pull the file in from cloud storage. Rotating is free, needs no account, and the servers that do the work are in Europe.

Questions about rotating video

Will rotating lose quality?

Turning the picture means the video is encoded again, so a small amount of quality is spent on that pass. It is nothing like the loss you get from compressing to a small target size, and on a single rotation it is usually not visible.

Why does my video look sideways in some players only?

A phone often records upright footage as a sideways picture plus an orientation flag, and not every player reads that flag. Rotating the picture itself and saving a new file removes the ambiguity, so the clip looks the same everywhere.

What is the difference between rotating and flipping?

Rotating turns the whole frame around its centre by a fixed angle. Flipping mirrors it, either left to right or top to bottom, which is what you want when text in the shot reads backwards. Both are separate settings and can be used together.

Which video formats can I rotate?

MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM, MKV, WMV, FLV and the other common containers. The video comes back as MP4 by default, and the settings panel can save it as 3G2, 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, OGV, WEBM or WMV instead.

Can I rotate several videos at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and each is rotated separately with the same settings, then returned as its own file.

Does it cost anything?

No. Rotating a video here is free and does not require an account. A paid plan raises the upload limit and how many files you can process at once.
