Why convert MOV to MP4

MOV is Apple, MP4 is everyone

QuickTime MOV is the container an iPhone and a Mac write. Windows players, Android phones and a lot of web players either refuse it or want an extra codec first. MP4 holds the same picture and sound in a wrapper all of them read.

Often only a rewrap

A MOV from a phone usually already holds H.264 or H.265 video with AAC sound, and MP4 accepts all three. Set both codecs to Copy and the streams move across untouched: no re-encoding, so nothing is lost and it finishes quickly.

Nothing to install

Conversion runs on our servers over an encrypted connection. There is no software to download and no account needed to use it.

From a MOV file to an MP4 file

Drop in the .mov or .qt file straight from the phone, the camera or the Mac it came off. The format is read from the file itself, so there is nothing to declare, and you can add several videos at once. Each one comes back as its own MP4 with the same settings applied.

The output is always MP4, the format with the widest support across phones, browsers, players and editing software.

You can also paste a link instead of uploading, or pull the file in from cloud storage.

The video settings

The video codec select decides how the picture is stored. H.264 is the safe answer that plays on almost anything. H.265 and AV1 reach a similar picture in a smaller file but need a recent player. Copy carries the existing video stream over untouched and only rewraps it into MP4, which is the fastest route when the codec is already what you want.

Frame rate and screen size are there for a target device that needs a particular number, and deinterlacing cleans up footage from an older camera or a TV recording.

The bitrate method decides how quality is controlled. CRF asks for a constant quality and lets the size follow, on a scale where a lower number means better quality and a bigger file. Constant and variable bitrate let you name the figure in kbps instead.

Anything you do not touch is not sent at all, so the engine keeps its own defaults for it.

The audio settings

The sound track can be re-encoded to AAC, HE-AAC, MP3, MP2, Opus or Vorbis, or copied across as it is. Bitrate, sample rate up to 96000 Hz, and stereo or mono are separate selects beside it.

There is also a switch that removes the audio completely, which is what you want for a silent background clip or before you put a new sound track on the video.

Free to use, and private by default

Converting a video to MP4 is free and needs no account. Every upload and download runs over an encrypted connection, so your footage cannot be read on the way.

Processing is fully automated: nobody watches your videos and they are never used to train AI models. You keep the copyright and the ownership of both the video you upload and the one you get back.

The servers that do the work are in Europe.

Questions about converting MOV to MP4

Why will my MOV file not play?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container. macOS and iOS open it without a thought, while a Windows player, an Android phone or a website often will not touch it. The video inside is usually fine: it is the wrapper that is the problem, and MP4 is the wrapper everything reads.

Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?

It does not have to. Set the video and audio codec to Copy and the existing streams are moved into the MP4 container as they are, which changes nothing about the picture or the sound. Pick a codec instead and the video is encoded again, so a little detail goes, and the bitrate method is there to steer how much.

Will the MP4 be smaller than the MOV?

Often, because footage from a camera or a screen recorder is stored generously and re-encoding it to H.264 or H.265 packs it tighter. How much smaller depends entirely on the source. If you need the file under a particular size, use the Compress video app, where you name the number in megabytes.

Can I convert several videos at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like and each one is converted separately with the same settings, then returned as its own MP4.

Do I need QuickTime or any other software?

No. The conversion happens on our servers, so it does not matter whether the device you are sitting at can open a MOV file in the first place. A browser is all you need.

Does it cost anything?

No. Converting to MP4 here is free and does not require an account. A paid plan raises the upload limit and how many files you can process at once.
