Set the new volume level. For example, 50% will halve the volume, and 200% will double it.
MP4 is what most people bring, and it is far from the only format that works. A MOV from an iPhone, an AVI, a WEBM, an MKV or a WMV all go through the same app, and the level you pick is applied to the whole file from the first second to the last.
You can add several videos at once. Each one is processed on its own with the same volume setting and comes back as its own file, so a batch of clips recorded at the same low level can be fixed in a single pass.

Boosting multiplies the level of every sample by the same factor. A recording made across a room has plenty of room left and takes 250% or 300% cleanly. A clip whose audio was already mixed near the maximum has almost none, and the loudest moments flatten against the ceiling instead of getting louder. That is heard as crackle on drums or a hard edge on consonants, and it cannot be undone afterwards.
So work upwards in steps. Pick 150%, listen to the loudest passage, and if it is still too quiet run the original again at a higher percentage rather than boosting the boosted copy.
The same drop-down goes the other way. Percentages below 100% bring an overpowering soundtrack down, and 0% mutes the video entirely, which is the quickest way to strip audio you are going to replace later.
One fixed percentage suits one file. When several recordings have to match each other, or a speaker jumps between loud and quiet, the normalize audio app measures the material first.
